Nestled in the heart of Harlem, Fredrick Johnson Park is more than just a neighborhood green space—it’s a beloved community hub rich in history and pride. Locals affectionately call it “The Jungle,” a name that reflects its raw energy, strong community spirit, and the fierce passion found on its courts. The park is home to the Althea Gibson Tennis Courts, honoring the groundbreaking champion—and her coach, Frederick Johnson, a Harlem icon who coached with only one arm and inspired generations of athletes.
We feel incredibly fortunate to play a small role in the park’s ongoing tennis legacy, offering classes and programming to the community and all who love the game. To teach here, in a space that embodies resilience, excellence, and Black tennis history, is both an honor and a responsibility we carry with pride.
